Some great answers then...but what if ...what if the officer knew a language other than Spanish yet he was not compensated for that?

I think it brings up an interesting point - what about all the other cultures/languages/etc? They should be equally esteemed, right?

What about the instance in San Jose where the officer shot the woman who was wielding a vegetable peeler? Okay, it looked to me like a cleaver, but apparently wasn't. They even say that "It was an Asian vegetable peeler - but neither my Chinese nor Japanese friends had ever seen one like it - it was only a Vietnamese peeler.

I do think we need to make English the official language - it's getting out of control. I think it's a good idea still to be multilingual, but we are ONE NATION and need to be able to SPEAK to each other ...

I think it is a great idea, but if the officer is going to go to school to learn the language, I think he or she should be rewarded with an even better pay increase than 3%. After all he is doing something very positive for the community.

smacks of discrimination to be honest, I can speak roughly five languages 3 of them really well BUT not Spanish so where would that leave me................trust me they come and find me when they have a German, Italian person that does not speak English period [usually on holiday]

I can see this having some edge of biting the, in the butt at a later date..............

I am not American BUT really feel if I CHOSE to live in your country or any country for that matter the LEAST I can do is have the manners to learn the language

thats completely legitimate. employers pay more for marketable skills, and the ability to speak spanish is an esspecially important one for police. its a sign of the times that its neccasary, but the police agency isn't doing anything wrong in making sure it has officers that can communicate with an element of society

I think it's time to make English the official language of the USA. If not, those who speak spanish will REPLACE those who don't.

I think this is excellent. Employees who further their education beyond the minimum requirements in fields which can prove to be an asset to the organization they work for should be rewarded and given incentive to do such!

Fine with me. Give all the Mexicans the jobs, and the white man can live off welfare for a change.
