Summer vacations occasionally dragged, even though they were fun, so wondered when a kid (raised Lutheran) if heaven would be boring after a few hundred thousand years. Eternity is a HECK of a long time!
No, I'm not being snarky, and don't want diatribes OR extensive comments from ANYBODY'S religious books about how lovely the afterlife will be, contemplating the Eternal. But I'm wondering---seriously---how WILL we cope with such huge timespans? Will the Eternal blank our memories periodically, so each "day" is new to us? Will there be chances to nap for a million years or so, or will we get chances to redo/relive new lives if desired, or what?
I'm interested in reading/getting all sorts of opinions, beliefs, wishes, and hopes here, from all religious/spiritual perspectives---but please, let's keep things reasonably civil, ok? Thanks!
(Begins to brew nice tea and coffee and sits expectantly, waiting, with cookies handy....)

Also, from my understanding of religious writings, there are an infinite number of worlds of God beyond what we can see and touch. Having an eternity to explore all of these worlds has got be exciting. In fact if we knew how exciting it would be we probably would hasten our exit from this one.
Good question...

I think that's a really valid question. You're right, eternity is a very long time. However, as the bible tells us, we are not capable, in our limited human understanding, to at this point in time grasp the glory that heaven will be. The bible does not say this, but I think in heaven there will not be the concept of time as there is on this earth. In eternity, it will always be "now". We rarely live in the present, we are thinking about yesterday, what we need to do in half an hour, or tomorrow. But eternity will be differernt, and exactly as the bible outlines: "eye has not seen, ear has not heard, the heart cannot conceive, of all that God has prepared for those who love Him".
Those very few in the bible who got a glimpse of heaven said they couldn't describe it. I am sure that is so; no human word could describe the beauty of it.

No doubt. I have wondered how constantly worshipping God would not get boring after say 1 zillion years.
But then I thought of that. These people keep worshipping God.
Why? They must not be bored. They could do other things if they wanted to, but they choose apparently to mainly be in awe of God. It's incomprehnsible. I just can't fathom it with my little mind. I was listening to the Bible today on CD, and was listening to Jesus' sermon on the mount. It says store your treasures in Heaven. Where your treasures are is where your heart will be. So if I think Heaven will be boring, my heart is not into it. If I store up treasures in heaven, then I can't wait to get there.
Of course it seems lately I'm miserable on Earth, so Heaven doesn't sound bad even if perhaps boring. After all, no more pain, that sounds good. No more sorrow. That sound good. Have you heard the saying "Bored to tears."? So you can't be bored to tears there. I also read there are all kinds of wonderous things up there to look at. We like light shows here on earth, and great music. Are you in for the greatest music concert and light show that you never get bored with? I'm in!
Read Revelation 22. The bad people outside the gates of the great city don't seem to be so happy.

its really sad you have to ask us to be civil. Heaven is no where discribed as a vacation type place. In fact there is adequate reason to believe we are being prepared for a job there. I am hoping to be a judge.. Believe me you all want me to be a judge, if not maybe a teacher, or just an enjoyed companion. I know I coulda done any of these here but really I find you guys a little difficult to handle and as a judge here I could not turn anybody into a pile of dust without a long boring ceremony first.
your a pile of dust,,,and you zap dust to dust,, and you you should always have been dust, where is that cleaning lady it is getting really dusty in here.

If you want to have a party for a hundred thousand years, then go to hell, coz that's where you can do all the fun things you always wanted to, that's where I'm going.
Would you really like to sit around with a bunch of goody goodies and talk about wing waxing, and who farted in the last thousand years, what a drama that would be!!?
I'm an agnostic, and don't mean offense, but the whole idea of heaven for me is as strange as the ridiculous idea that suicide bombers are welcomed by 21 virgins and loved for eternity.
What happens to female muslims, does anyone know, or are they turned into virgins so they can service forever the smelly hairy morons who beat them up in their lifetime, (generalising again..).

Well, according to the bible, when it is all said and done, there will be a new heaven and a new earth. the new earth is actually this current one after it has been purified. I kinda picture the biblical heaven the way life is right now just without suffering and pain and death and all that bad stuff. Everything would be perfect.

No...i don't think of heaven receives boring. it is going to likely be more beneficial positive than something we've experienced in the international. You stated that one and each and every of the "exciting" issues will be banned - heaven will be full of issues so a lot more beneficial than the stupid issues we savor in the international. no longer wanting to offer up earthly issues is like being a toddler content cloth with taking section in interior the airborne dirt and dust & no longer wanting to pass to Disney international. we are so naive, all all of us understand is this earth, so we are pleased with our little joys the following, yet we are informed that the subsequent life is going to be infinitely more beneficial positive than something we've ever basic. The humorous ingredient (even if that's surely no longer very humorous in any respect) about human beings no longer wanting to spend eternity with God is they are going to get their favor. Hell is eternal separation from God. in case you do not opt to spend eternity along with your Maker - you received't. and individuals say that God is bigoted! like it or no longer although, you'd be someplace for eternity. i love the quote through C.S. Lewis - "you do not have a soul, you're a soul. you've a body." our bodies received't very last...yet our souls - what makes us who we are, it really is eternal.

The afterlife is not like life on earth....we won't have the sensation or feeling of being bored unless we go to hell and that is part of our specific punishment. In Heaven there will only be complete satisfaction and since God is Infinate, we will have an infinate discovery of Him! I'm sure he will keep us interested.

I could handle the boredom, but the idea of spending all eternity with a bunch of bible-thumping evangelicals is absolutely terrifying. If by some freak cosmic accident I end up in such a hell, first thing I'll do is kick an angel up the butt to see what happens.

Eternity is not time. Time does not exist. Eternity is one infinite moment, known as the Spacious Present, or the Eternal Now. There is no boredom, because as part of God, we have the power of creation. We can do anything, be anything, without losing the truth of what we are, as eternally one with our Creator.
