Yep, they are cute! But chihuahuas have never been "wild".
They have been bred to be companion dogs.
Puppies being cute does have a function in their survival though, the cutest ones are picked out to be pampered and later to breed with other cute puppies, while the ugly ones... well... we just won't talk about them.

A Chihuahua would never survive in the wild in my opinion. I was raised with them (my folks show them) and they really wouldn't make great hunters or anything because of their poor eyesight and hearing. Honestly I think they are cute so people will love them. I think all dogs are cute, especially Labradors. But then I'm biased.... lol

You know those wild chihuahuas always use their good looks to get food.... Chihuahua's are a domesticated pet, and are not wild animals.

As dogs were domesticated, they were bred to have certain traits for certain jobs which is why their is a wide variety of breeds/traits... and people like things to be aesthetically pleasing....

Though I cant seem to find what the chihuahua was bred for...

Chihuahuas were originally thought to be descendants of an ancient, similar, but slightly larger breed associated with royalty in Aztec civilizations known as the Techichi. However, due to the lack of archaeological remains it is now believed that Chihuahuas were brought to Mexico by Spanish settlers. The most current theory holds that Spanish merchants brought Chihuahuas to Spain by way of their trade routes with China and from there to Mexico. The well documented practice in China of dwarfing both plants and animals is the basis for the theory that Chihuahuas originated there.[citation needed]But another theory is that they originated in Egypt and were traded into Spain and later Mexico.

Chihuahuas were first taken into the United States by American visitors to Mexico.

I have a chihuahua that is also really cute her name is "Elf" she's very sweet to people she knows, but if she doesn't know you watch out she turns into a little land shark. I have had people come up to our home and see her in the yard and say that when she's barking her eyes are fire red like a demon dog.

Here's an article from the NY Times on what makes something "cute".

I really dislike chihuahuas. I don't find there to be many cute things about any of them. They are yappers and most suffer from what I like to refer to as 'little dog syndrome'. Most get attched to one person and everyone else can go to ****. Sorry, if you like them so well, but I just don't get it. They think they can take on any dog any size. My boxer looks at the neighbors chihuahua like come into my yard I haven't had lunch.
