I'm based in Singapore, with a 4 day weekend coming up. Looking for some place to travel, away from tourist traps, polution, and hustle bustle. Want a VERY nice place to stay, water amenities, things to do, etc. Someplace close-by, so as not to have to spend much time on an airplane. I have little interest in the culture / history of this part of the world. Just looking for someplace, nice, closeby, and not a tourist trap to get away to for a few days. Suggestions??

In asia if it ain't a tourist trap there ain't much to do. Try either Pattaya which is a tourist trap but lots to do and 2 hours from Bangkok by car. Or Rayong which is another hour further and not so touristy. I hear nice beaches and some things to see.

There is also Kuala Lumpur which is very metropolitan.

Or you can try Bangkok and stay away from the hustle and bustle. There is hotel and resort called Rama Gardens Hotel Bangkok. I was considering staying there once. 21 acres of gardens near the old Airport, Don Muang. It's away from the city center yet a half hour taxi ride to downtown if you want. Cost is from USD 33 to 80 per night depending on the type of room. It's rated 3 stars. Read the reviews.

I like to stay at the Emerald Hotel about half way to downtown area for USD 37 per night for a 4 star. You are away from the noise of downtown though a main thoroughfare runs right in front of the hotel. But, you can take the subway to downtown and shop, eat or drink. And return the quiet of the hotel. I think it is pretty convenient. Massage parlors are 50 feet away from the front door. So, it's like being in a big town without being in one.

There are alot of temples, museums and a zoo in Bangkok. If you really care for that. Sometimes it is just entertaining to see what you have heard about.

Check www.asiarooms.com for rates all over asia.

Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia or Brunei. All these places are near to S'pore. If you don't like visit natural places, then Malaysia is the choice as it contain best of the both. Most places in Malaysia are not occupied with tourists, so you can find peace and calmness esp. in areas of Tioman Islands. These places are also equipped with basic amenities.

Kota Kinabalu, stay in one of the Sutera Marina hotels and have a rental car. Drive around Borneo and maybe spend a night on the other side of the peninsula.

A peaceful environment that meets all your requirements - checkout KHAO LAK in the province of PHANG NGA. Take direct flight to Phuket, and from there a 2-hours drive. Very natural environment, actually protected national park territory. No highrise buildings allowed, and no motorised sea-sports permitted. If you need things to do - river rafting, elephant/jungle trekking, snorkeling at nearby islands etc. Hotels/guests house to suit every budget available. Have been there, just love it!

Malaysia, lots of possibilities & just next door. It meets all your requirements. Think of island of P. Tioman, Port Dickson, Genting Highland, Club Med in Terengganu, Rasa Sayang in Penang, etc. etc. I'm Singaporean but drive up to Malaysia often for 3/4 days holiday.

If I were you, I would go to Pulau Bintan or Pulau Aur, short distance, nice seaview bungalows, golf in Bintan or scuba diving in Aur. Enjoy good food and good athmosphere in both places.
