In most areas it doesn't matter how you learn, but there are rules. Some jurisdictions make you wait to an older age to take the road test if you haven't taken drivers ed. Many insurance companies give discounts for drivers ed graduates as well. Whether it is required or not, professional instruction is better. Most parents, not being trained instructors, may have the odd bad habit, or actually have learned something wrong themselves, so will pass it on. By the by, I have taught several people to drive, they all passed first time, and are good drivers, but none of them were my kids.

Absolutely...as long as a person can pass both a written test and a driving test at their DMV then they can get a license. Drivers ED through the school is reccomended (you really should take it, you;ll learn a lot!) but it is not required.

It depends on the state your in. My knowledge is Ca. In Cali you must have drivers education completed to apply for your permit. There are private schools that offer this class, so you don't have to wait for over crowded schools to fit you in. Then to get your drivers license you must complete drivers training (behind the wheel). Sometimes parents think they can do this, but you must be a licensed drive instructor to do so. Be safe on the road and happy driving.

No - to get a drivers ed certificate you HAVE to take their course,
This will do two things: you will get your permit quicker and your insurance rates will be less expensive than those who do not take the drivers ed course.
