My female cockatiel is vomiting her seed up. She tugs at her feet and pukes. Then eats it again. She a creates a large pile of it. What's wrong with her? What do I do?

Boy ... I wonder if she's in a nesting mood and is pretending she's feeding some babies? I haven't seen girls do this before, although I've seen boy parakeets puke up some tasty tidbits for their girlfriends.

The other thing that comes to mind is a condition called "crop binding". (URL below) It may or may not be relevant to your situation, though.

Anyhow, your best bet is probably to give your vet a call and ask this question. Your vet will know if it's normal behavior, and if it isn't an office visit may be in order.

Birds are pretty good at hiding it when they're sick, in some cases when they're so sick they're about to die. When they exhibit bizarre behavior or (in this case) there's a chance they may not be getting enough to eat, it's a good idea to give the doc a call.

I read all the answers before deciding to answer you, because mostly all the answers are correct, as an Australian Avian breeder, I can assure you, do not be alarmed, this is perfectly normal behavior. When Australian parrotts start to mature into a breeding age this process starts of regurgestation, its instinct & only preparing for young. I would say your cockatiel is 12 to 18 months old.

I breed cockatiels. She sounds like she is coming in to breeding mode. Most cockatiels do this, it is normal for them to do this. She is practicing on how to feed her mate (which could be you depending on your relationship) Don't worry about it.

But if she starts losing weight and getting skinny, do take her to the vet. There might be more going on internally.

Usually a bird regurgitates its food to feed its babies. If this isn't the case you should take her to see you Vet!

She might have some kind of blockage in her digestive tract. Take your bird to an avian vet. It's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

Take the bird to the vet? Whenever one of my dogs got really bad, day or night, I take her to the vet or emergency vet. YOU are the bird's good-health line.
