Factors That Contribute to Disbelief: Not all atheists were raised as such. Many were exposed to a form of religion and at one time believed in God. However, serious health or family problems or certain injustices they experienced weakened their faith. For others, courses taught in schools of higher learning have had a negative impact on their concept of God.
So it could be because of the education he has received, the problems he has experienced, or religious hypocrisy and false teachings he has seen that has turned a person against God.
The arguments of atheists show that they have not really studied the Bible. Rather, they have listened to the clergy of Christendom who have taught lies concerning Jehovah God, such as the one that he is the proprietor of a roasting compartment for human creatures called “purgatory.” This hell of literal fire and other false doctrines such as trinity and immortality of the soul have turned some people away from God even before they investigate his Word. The Bible does not teach such unreasonable doctrines. They are taught by false religion, not by true Christianity. The atheist has erred in that he has wrongly assumed that the false religions of Christendom are of God. Rather, they are of the Devil.—2 Cor. 4:4.
So it does no good for the atheist to point to the ghastly persecutions, inquisitions and wars for which the so-called Christian religion has been responsible. The Bible declares such religions false: “They publicly declare they know God, but they disown him by their works.”—Titus 1:16, NW.
Perceiving the Roots
A towering tree is an impressive sight. Yet, the eye merely perceives the leaves, branches, and trunk. The roots—the life source of the tree—lie hidden deep in the ground.
It is much the same with atheism. Like a lofty tree, the denial of God’s existence grew to an impressive stature by the 19th century. Could life and the universe exist without a supernatural First Cause? Is the worship of such a Creator a waste of time? The answers from the leading philosophers of the day were loud and clear. “Just as we no longer need a moral code, neither do we need religion,” declared Friedrich Nietzsche. “Religion is the dream of the human mind,” asserted Ludwig Feuerbach. And Karl Marx, whose writings would have profound influence in coming decades, boldly stated: “I want to increase the mind’s freedom from the chains of religion.”
Multitudes were impressed. What they perceived, however, were simply the leaves, branches, and trunk of atheism. The roots were in place and sprouting long before the 19th century began. Surprisingly, the modern growth of atheism was fostered by the religions of Christendom! How so? Because of their corruption, these religious institutions provoked a great deal of disillusionment and protest.

You can't kill God...
God is thought to have created every thing out of nothing. So, every thing created by God is blessed (or cursed) with life. If you think about it, the physical world is absolutely useless without life being along for the ride. Without life, nothing would ever change. It would be very boring. Every thing is in a state of change. We don't think of the earth as being alive, but, it's always in a state of geologic change. Very slow compared to our brief life span. God is every thing. It's all a part of life. We are truely created from the dust and muck that is here. Life is to be lived. We are a part of God, God's children.

The Germans - seriously. Let me explain
Developments in modern German thought, roughly from Martin Luther, through the Enlightenment, to Friedrich Nietzsche, contributed to this defining idea of a dead God. These German thinkers started about 500 years ago down a "slippery slope" that led inevitably to the death of God. Reading Luther and Erasmus on the freedom of the will, Lessing and Kant on moral proofs of the existence of God, Feuerbach on the critique of religion, and Nietzsche on the critique of Judeo-Christian morality and the death of God will prove that it was the Germans.
So God is no more, he has ceased to be, he snuffed it.

Epicurus is the earliest documented atheist, though surely he was building on the shoulders of others, because atheism and asceticism are not a natural mix.
