I would like to paint the walls of our living room a color that would complement and bring to life a plum colored couch and love seat. The floors are oak, ceilings are high. This is a charming old house with large windows.

Thank you for asking this question.

OK

Imagine your plum sofa with sage green walls with white trim. Find throw pillows with both colors in them or a rug with those colors. With the green and plum think of a flower. plum color bulb with a green stem.

OR

Cream walls with white white trim.

OR

Mustard or gold color walls will do the trick.

I think you may do better by finding a nice painting, rug, or pillow with plum in it and pull another color from it for your wall color. don't be afraid of the colors. I like the green idea personally. Sage green to me is really refreshing.

Plum Sofa

depends on the size of the room really. Also what color stain is the wood trim? Light Oak? Maple? If its a large room you can go with darker colors but I would recommend is something that is neutral yet contrast the trim and carpet and compliments the sofa (unless you plan on changing furniture in the near future). A soft yellow like pineapple fizz from behr should work or a soft to medium shade of green. Stay away from light or bright shades of blues. Anothing thing to consider though is the amount of light that the room gets when picking a shade of colors.

I also live in a charming old home with high ceilings, large windows and oak floors with a plum colored sofa, chair and otoman. I went with a pale butter yellow. My wood tables in the same room are mahogany stained. The pale butter yellow is not to bright and glaring with the darker colored furniture. The lighter walls did wonders for my living room. I got compliments from everyone I know the first time they saw my choice on the walls.

You could take one of the chair arm covers to the store and find a color that compliments or matches, tho i would definitely go lighter with a shade of green than the furniture. how about adding a splash of color to perhaps one wall... and adding throw pillows on the sofa with the accent... you could add either a plum or burgundy to a wall, and add a floral print or a stripe with that color accented in it... you can get some fabric for curtains as well, that has the accent color.... just a thought

As you said ceiling are high, charming old house with large windows, white might be too bright to the room. I feel a pale green or pale yellow will suits your place and bring out the color of your plum sofa.

The first color that came to my mind was an Antique white color, but then I thought maybe a light olive greenish color. I think that would bring out the natural color plum

Antique white is very rich, and enhance it with gold toned throw pillows, or sparkles on the edge of the lampshade, brass candlesticks, or gold edged flower vase. Make sure you have very soft sheer antique white on the windows to block peering in, but the draperies could be a lighter shade of a gold tone similar to the throw pillows' color, to echo the color. A drape of a soft throw or afghan on the corner of the sofa will add charm. Antique white, gold toned, or a combo of the two will work.
Sounds like a terrific room!

Hi! Plum is such a rich colour. You want to compliment it with a gorgeous gold marbled wall. Or, have you seen those 'suede' paints. They're amazing, they look and feel just like suede, and it's just the thing for plum couches and high walls. Happy decorating.

You could go with a light beige. It'll go with the floors and as the couches are so bold wont be "too much" in the room.

I was also going to suggest a gray but I think with the way you described the house that may give you too much of a modern or contemporary look. ...oh Lord, I just saw lilac sprinkles mentioned...for the love of God, it is not the 80's anymore and I think confetti as a decoration is out.
