I have a 6 1/2 month old mini schnauzer. the past couple of days, she has been licking at her vagina a lot, so I looked at it this evening. It's kinda swollen, and there is a little blood on it. I've never had a puppy go in to heat before, so I don't know if this is normal or what. Please help.

Definately in heat thats the only time they bleed it will last 2 to 3 weeks. Go to petsmart and get some bitches britches it will save your carpet and furniture. Plus the little diaper type things make really cute pics!

Definitely is. You can't get her spayed for the next few weeks. But as soon as this heat passes you better get her spayed if you are going to do it. I'm not sure what type she is but I believe she should come back in heat in about 6 months. Go buy some doggy diapers AND KEEP HER IN THE HOUSE. don't give any males a chance to get to her. If you you will be a grandma in 2 or 3 months and she is to young to have babies. Good Luck

At 61/2mos I think she will start going into heat so she needs to go to the vet now to get fixed for when a female dog goes into heat all kinds of hormonal changes occur and it is not healthy for her--why a lot of female dogs get cancer-being allowed to go into heat with no following pregnancy-really messes hormones up and increases estrogen-a cause of cancer in humans also so do your self and especially be reponsible to your dog and take to vet. Not 100% sure if this is heat related-only a vet can tell for if she has a infection vaginal or bladder that will cause swelling and bleeding and that definetely requires a vet to give exam and then proper medicine

Yep, A swollen vulva and discharge; she's in heat alright. If you don't want her bred, keep her away from males dogs. If your worried about the discharge, you can get doggie diapers at a pet store/Walmart etc. It CAN last for many weeks, but hopefully it won't be as long as my dog was in her first heat; 10 weeks.

Yep, she is in heat. The bleeding will last about a week, but the heat cycle will last for 3 weeks. Please keep her away from any males during this time. She is too young to have pups. Unless you plan to breed her, you should have her spayed.

Thats exactly what that is. You puppy is just going through he cycle..just like humans do. If you are planning on breeding then you are going to want to buy little dog diapers. Which they sell at your local pet store. If not it would be best to get her fixed as soon as possible.
