John 3:14As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 3:15that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Isn't everyone a "Son of Man". Why does Jesus say that, and who is the "Son of Man".

We know that Jesus is called the "Son of Man" repeatedly. I am not quite sure why. But I think it is because from a Divine perspective, Jesus left heaven to become a man. He was born of mankind. So from our perspective it seems like we are all sons of man. But from a heavenly perspective it is significant that God became a man.

Like I said, I'm not positive that this is accurate.

Jesus is the son of man because he's adam's descendant (sons or daughters were male or female descendants)... as we all are, but he is THE son of man... he's the son of adam that came to right the wrong that adam committed. he's the only one that could make the way for all mankind to once again have eternal life, as God had intended.

"even so the son of man must be lifted up": the bronze serpent that moses lifted up in the wilderness was a healing serpent. God had been angry with the disobedient israelites and poisinous snakes bit them as their punishment. but the people crie dout to God, as did moses, so God told moses to make a snake, and whoever looked at the snake was healed and lived. that served as a symbol of what the messiah would do for them: heal them and bring them life. and when jesus was lifted up on the cross, it fulfilled this kind of prophecy.

Jesus was not only the son of man, but the son of God. it's very complicated sounding (and hard to explain) but it only sounds that complicated because it's so simple. :)

Son of man, the phrase, appears 134 times in the Bible. Of those, 47 are small case indicating man or descendants of Adam. The Gospels use the term most often and indicate Jesus by capital letters, Son of Man. Jesus uses the term to indicate Himself. The remaining five instances of the phrase, four indicate Jesus and one indicates man. The distinction is in the capitalization of Son and Man. It is one of the many consistencies in the Bible as these many authors established the distinction equally. Daniel made the distinction long before Jesus was born and prophesied the Resurrection.

Daniel 7:13
“ I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him.

Yes, "son of man" is a Hebrew idiom for human being. Two people who are known for applying that term to themselves are Daniel and Jesus. It's actually an expression of humility, but in light of whom Christians understand Jesus to be, it becomes an honorific. Of course, if we consider the term in its ordinary aspect, it suggests that we all have our crosses to bear.

Incidentally, the "so" in 3:15 does not mean "so much". It is better translated as "thus", giving a slightly different flavor to the verse.

To describe himself Jesus used "Son of Man" most often. In Luke 22:69, he refers to an Old Testament passage (Daniel 7:13,14) about a son of man (human being) who was given an everlasting kingdom. The Jews have understood Daniel to be referring to the promised Messiah.

Daniel 7:13,14:
"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Luke 22:69,70:
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am."
