There doesn't appear to be anything prior to the music.
The Purple Rain: 20th Anniversary Special Edition DVD apparently discusses the meaning of the song -- I don't have the DVD, that bit is outlined in the review, but they don't give a meaning. (That's the Rope of Silicon link).
The Historical Dictionary of American Slang turns up bupkus, but is a fun site on its own.

I read that Prince believes that when the Apocalypse occurs, it will rain purple and those who are going to Heaven will be standing in the purple rain. In the song "Purple Rain", he sings to this girl that all we wants is to see her standing in the purple rain, meaning she is going to Heaven.
Prince has/had some strange beliefs when it came to religion.

Prince must have been hallucinating while smoking cannibis. On a rainy day in the early 1980s, while he was high, he must have been seeing the rain in purple and violet. This goes to show you that messing with drugs is wrong.

Purple represents either stunted or stifled emotions. unrequited love, anger rooted in pain and vulnerability, passions. it can also be seen as a royal color alluding due to the dyes that Roman emperor's used in their garb from Phoenicia.
