Treatment of Sleep Disorders
Treatment varies, depending on the specific sleep disorder, but may include psychologic strategies as well as medications.

Good sleeping habits

Go to bed only when sleepy.

Sleep only in the bedroom.

If still awake after 20 minutes, leave the bedroom and return when sleepy.

Get up at the same time each morning regardless of the amount of sleep during the night.

Discontinue caffeine and nicotine in the evening (if not completely).

Establish a daily exercise program.

Avoid alcohol because it may disrupt continuity of sleep.

Limit fluid intake in the evening.

Learn and practice relaxation techniques.

Medications

Sleeping pills have limited uses. They may help, for example, during an overnight airplane ride, and when taken in a crisis, they might prevent an acute problem from turning into chronic insomnia. But doctors and patients have come to learn that long-term use has more risks than benefits. Today, most insomnia patients are not given sleeping pills, and most insomnia patients who do take drugs use them briefly. Long-term users usually have either a generalized anxiety disorder or a chronic physical illness exacerbated by anxiety, such as arthritis or heart disease.

It is very important that you inform your physician of any and all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and prescribed medications.

Sleeping medication is not the answer if your friend is in pain due to a wound. If possible elevate the wound above the level of the heart and take whatever pain medication has been ordered by his doctor. This with a quiet relaxed and dimmly lit room should be helpful.

There is an herb (now in pill form) called Melatonin, it has been used for hundreds of years. It can be found at any store/groceries/pharmacy. There are no known side effects. And it is not addictive. It is even been used for children with adhd to help them " relax for sleep. It is best to take it and lay down, and it is very gentle. You can read up on it from the link below.. Hope this helps...

Anyone can suggest over-the-counter products. There are several to try and none predictably work better than any other. Every person is different so you have to try and try again.

However, it sounds like there is more of a problem than simple intermittent insomnia (what over the counter sleep aids are designed to help with) so your friend should see a doctor.

The sleep disorder seems to be secondary to pain. Better that he address that problem, preferably through a doctor. Issues of contraindications with medicines he is already taking, allergies to medicine etc. can only be appreciated after obtaining history and exam.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

I didn't quite understand...is he not sleeping because he's in pain from a wound? If so...he needs to see a doctor. A doctor might be able to prescribe a pain medication that will help him sleep.
