Hey Yahooligans. I have already done a root canal, but not here in Canada, it was in Saudia Arabia. It was really PAINFUL! I had bad experience. After that root canal, I have always been scared of the dentist because of the pain i felt during that root canal. By the way I did get needles in my mouth so i get numb, but i still felt pain.
Now i need at least 2 or 3 root canals, but im really scared to go to the dentist. the dentist gave me two options, get me numb or put me asleep during root canal. i would wanna be put asleep but what if i feel pain?

You certainly will not feel any pain during the surgery if you are put under. But once you awaken the pain will be there and very strong I'm afraid for a while. But better to get it done now then later.

If you are sedated during the root canal, you won't remember anything that happens, but you will still be able to respond to simple commands..."turn your head to the left"..."open wider"...etc. Sometimes if a tooth is badly infected or the nerve is inflammed, it can be difficult to numb properly. The acidity of the infection affects the numbing medicine, making it not work as well. I highly recommend sedation, and after you are "asleep" the dentist will still get you numb the regular way.

A root canal would not harm anymore than getting a filling. The discomfort linked with root canal is from the an infection and rot that leads as much because it, not the technique itself. i might choose for on the inspiration canal over extraction. i've got had quite a few.

If your dentist does the anaesthetic correctly it should work. If the pulp of your tooth is very inflamed it may be more difficult to numb it. The best option for him then is to do a bit of the work and dress the pulp with a steroid dressing. This will be a little uncomfortable, but the dressing will get the inflammation in the tooth down so next time it will be easier to numb

No you will not feel any pain...I work for a dental office...we usually give patients such as your self a sedative such a Valium or xanex....and put them under nitrous oxide...my boyfriend was in the same place...I did just as I told you and now the dentist is no problem for him....to get though the night you might want to gargle warm salt water for 20 Min's and than eat ice cream (w/O nuts ) plain flavors for 20 Min's that will help alot.....I also know An other way to help you get thought the night but e-mail be directly if you would like to know....I should not post such advise...princesserica21

use the needles, I did and it wasnt that bad. those shots really do numb you good! I didnt even need the pain medication they gave me for afterwards, it was a bit sore but the truth, the pain my tooth felt before i had the root canal was way worse than what i felt during it and after, i just felt nothing but relief!

my suggest to you is this. if you will pay a lot of money to be put a sleep . you shouldn't do it. usually you will be OK with regular numbing . and at the same time , the dentist should be able to get you as comfortable as you want . just try to talk to him/her. if you still chose to be put a sleep you will not feel anything. a first experience is not always true. you will be OK with regular numbing . trust me . good luck

I think you should try it again, and just tell the doctor that you're hard to get numb, so you can get more medicine. Also, you get pills after the treatment for pain.
