if twisted enough, the brain stem's oxygen supply gets cut off-causing the brain to "suffocate" itself-in medical terms it called herniation.
once the brain dies-all body functions stop immediately-breathing included

Some teens tried this awhile back. They tried to break a girl's neck with the quick twist and it didn't work, didn't break anything. I don't remember the details but it was probably about 8 or so years ago.

If you can do it to chickens, it can be done to humans, though it takes strength and considerable technique to break the spine or pinch the nerves severely enough to stop the heart and breathing.
