I am not an alcoholic.I work very hard during the day,so its not that im not tired.I feel exhausted, but when i lay down i just get this burst of energy and i cant sleep. It is sort of like i go into hyper mode when i lay down to sleep.

I have figured out a no fail thing that works for me every night...I make my breathing slower (like it is when you're sleeping), get myself in a calm, peaceful state of mind (I refuse to think of things I have to do, work, etc.), and with every breath I inhale and exhale I count. I've recently heard that this is actually a widely used method. Sweet dreams!

I'm gonna assume you've tried to change your environment in order to get the best sleeping conditions. I had sleeping problems for a while and I went through just about every pillow, scent, temperature, and darkness that I could possibly change.
After all of these things were in perfect order, I just had to 'get tired'. I found that I was not completely exhausted at the end of the day. I started going to the gym and playing golf. Just being physical was not enough though. I also needed to be mentally exhausted. I started taking up new hobbies and reading a lot.
Finally, I found that if I kept activities out of the bedroom that I slept better. The more I read in bed, the harder it was to sleep. Watching tv in bed is the worst.
Hope this helps.

Most of the answers so far can be helpful.
Me, I used to THINK TOO MUCH to be able to go to sleep. Then I started going to sleep and mentally writing a letter to someone far away like a sister, (yawn) Dear Cathy...
I'd write whatever I would REALLY have written, without any bad news or 'going there' (..the electric went out today and all the meat in the freezer spoiled...)NOT!!!
In time, just having my mind busy that way and no bad stuff to remember, I'd just drift off.
Later on-now-I learned how to pray effectively and try not to but do fall asleep while laying in bed praying. I finish when I wake up. There's no time in God's world. Hope any of these answers work for you, its a major drag to be exhausted and not be able to sleep. Good Luck.

If it is something that is going on all the time you may need to try out Ambian CR for a week or so and see if that helps. You may need it longer. I read some tips on getting to sleep better. Heres what I remember and I'll add some of mine.
Dont eat within an hour or more of your bedtime (I eat IN bed and then try to sleep, lol)
No computer an hour before bed (the light from the screen does something)
Try leaving the TV on muted so you may not really feel like you HAVE to go to sleep. (I watch until I am tired and then mute it and go to sleep, I leave it on all night. I am also kinda afraid of the dark)
Try leaving a fan on or something so you have that white noise that will block out the little noises that can keep you up or wake you up. It will also keep you cooler.
Stay cooler, turn on a fan or the air so that you are not too hot to sleep. Its easier to sleep when you are not tossing and turning because you are sweating.
I sleep with no clothes on because clothes tangle all around me and I freak out. No way can I ever get to sleep with clothes on.
Try cutting out caffine and sugar at least the later part of your day

I heard a doctor recommend that if you exercise around 5pm your body temp rises and will fall slowly till about 9pm which is when you would Naturally become sluggish from the work out and could then fall asleep better.
Also a natural drug (OTC) to try is melatonin. It is naturally produced by the body but some people dont produce enough and this will definatly help you sleep w/o any chemicals or side effects.

Honey I don't know how old you are but man can I relate to you. I am Bipolar and have to take my night meds and a sleeping pill to get to sleep at night. If you cannot get to sleep you might like to go to the nearest health food store or drugstore and get some Melatonin. I know people that have used it and it worked on them. Unfortunately Mine is prescribed by my Psychiatrist so I can't help you there. If that doesn't work then you might like to get an over the counter sleep aid if the melatonin fails. Good Luck and God Bless

Try to stop your caffeine intake by 5:00, even 3:00 if you can. Don't eat or exercise after 8. Try to go to sleep at the same time every night and get 8 hours of sleep. Try not to take naps. If you are a heavy drinker, you'll need to cut back as alcohol reduces your REM sleep.

Dear Moon Goddess.....I have some suggestions that work for me.
1.no caffeine at least 3 hours before bedtime
2. read a "heavy" subject book..physics,politics,and so on...
3, pop in a movie that you know is really awful or boring
4. a glass of milk
5. half a turkey sandwhich
6. try falling asleep in someplace else other than your bed...rest your eyes..I have fallen to sleep in a chair and my couch...doing this
7. if you really cannot sleep the deep breathing suggested earlier can help you relax
8. Have your significant other give you a massage..especially around the neck and shoulders
9.take a warm bath...
well thats the extent of my expertise...good luck and I love your name...Moon Goddess...very lovely

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

I suspect that when you lay down - your mind races? you can't
relax, so you can't sleep.
This is a mental health issue.
These things in your head don't just go away. I would suggest
a complete workup & a visit to your Psychiatrist. You obviously
have some undealt with issues and its gonna keep you awake
until you resolve them....
