This is relevant in the R&S section because a lot of what is discussed is the nature of love. So do you think that dogs & cats have the capacity to love?

Absolutely! We have 5 cats, and 4 dogs. Our house is full of love. It amazes me to see how a dog and cat grow in their feelings for the other.

We lost one of our dogs several months ago, and it was like living in a morgue for a while. Everyone missed Bandit so bad. The animals moped for a week if not longer. We were heart broke.

About a year ago, one of our cats had kittens, and our 8 pound min. dash. got on the bed with the cat, and helped deliver the kittens! We could not believe it. Lucy would take the kitten when it was born, and start licking it, and then she would bite the cord into, and push it to momma cat. After wards, when the kittens were in their beds, Lucy the dog thought she was the momma and kept taking them away! We finally had to put a lock on the door. Then she just sat in front of it and cried. Poor baby, she needs some more babies!

The cats clean the dogs, Lucy Dog cleans the kittens, and her big baby, Angus who is almost 4. They are very protective over each other and all the babies in the family.

I get so much love and comfort when one of my babies (dachshund) cuddles up with me and just melts into me. It is so very special. I thank God for blessing us with animals.

How do you define love ? Among animals there is only the pecking order. They function in groups. Who's the alpha (dominate) ? Who's next most "powerful"? Who are followers ? It's interesting to take the "boss" of the herd out. There's always quite a bit of scramble to determine the next dominate. Dominance and power and "authority" can shift quite a bit when the order is disturbed, and not always in favor of the next in line of the "old" grouping. ---Anyway, what you imagine to be "love" of your cat etc. for you is just pecking order. Your pet is just responding to your dominance as alpha and it is currying favor from what it perceives as the head "cat". By doing so the animal instinctually is trying to insure it's own survival.

I can tell you without question that my grand dog worships the ground I walk on, she loves me unconditionally as long as there is a cookie involved.

The grand cats, however, could give a rats ***.

Mine certainly show concern for each other. When I accidentally stepped on the one cat’s tail the other raced over to check him out and make sure he was ok.

As much as these cats get into the lovey mood sometimes and want to smother me to death...I'd say yes.
