well i am a marine and trust me you dont want to be the guy smiling. plus there is usually a drill instructor there telling you to not smile...also you dont really wanna smile cuz before the picture you get a mesed up hair cut by some old *** dudes and they miss hair and leave patches and cut ears and puh har on your sclao... doesnt leave you in a smiling mood

If someone is smiling at you what do you think? Oh, how nice. When someone fowns or keeps a straight face what do you think? Oh better not mess with them. Also at boot camp (that is what Marines call it) we are told to keep our bearing...that would mean no smiling even if it is funny. So if you smile, your DI is going to thrash/IT you.

A smile is considered civilian attire, all of which is confiscated at the beginning of basic training. (USMC 79-82, Ooh-Rah)

I was in the Army, and the only ones who smiled in my unit were the women.

You should have seen my sons picture - Air Force.. such a serious face - Same with my other son, who was Navy.. Hubby, who was Army, also had a serious look..

ANY military photos you pose for (by tradition) should not have you smiling in them. Noone smiled in my training pics, not even the women (US Army)

cuz grunts (Marines) are a different breed. we're not trained to impress but rather to suppress. but most civilians see Marines more than soldiers or sailors to be aggressive anti-social violent psychopaths. that's ok....better a dead bad guy than a dead innocent ;-)
