I am having a terrible time living above a smoker. Supposedly he is taking his cigs outside, but maybe he's smoking when he knows I'm not home. I have all the windows open all the time with fans blowing fresh air in, something that won't be practical when the New England winter sets in (I have already once had the heat on with windows open). I have NEVER found an air purifier that is effective at all with smoke, and I have tried numerous ones. I am really concerned. I lived above smokers for three years once, and have been allergic and sensitive ever since. When my neighbor moved in downstairs, I didn't have any problem the first month, but now I find myself going out walking in the middle of the night to escape. Any suggestions on ways to clean the air or meds or anything to help? Not practical for me to move right now, even to another apartment.

If Robert L comes back, I would like to know more about the purification system you mention. You can email me if you go to my "personal page"; I have email address enabled. I have had such bad luck with air purifiers, even the high end ones!

I actually do know of a purifier that will work. I can't advertise here obviously, but it does work. My company just did a bingo hall with 200+ people in there and 80% were smoking, the air quality inside was better than it was outside. What I would do is tell the landlord that it is a problem and that your apartment is inhabitable. He needs to pay to have it fixed. The landlord can install a system that will remove the smoke and smell in the apartment that is being smoked in and also in yours. You won't have to pay for it and it gets fixed. Understand that you need to get the right product and it will take about 21 days to completely stablize the problem. A filter will NOT work!

I suggest an air conditioner or dehumidifier to exchange air efficiently in your apartment with the outdoors.

Plus, if he's smoking right outside the apartment it could be entering your place that way.
