Ever think that if she likes alcohol too much she might not be going to college next year? If its a parent then it is OK. Other than that it is illegal (well, even if your parents do it its illegal) and wrong.

If your parents will let you try it in the safety net of your home, fine. But no one else should give a minor alcohol. If you want to try it ask your parents. If they are not prudes they will let you and explain the consequences of alcohol. It opens up a great conversation with your parents.
No matter what you have heard, alcohol is a poison. Taken in small quantities no harm. Taken in large amounts can cause blood poisoning sickness and even death. No one tells you all this. It is all moderation. I drink, lightly and only when I want to not when I am sad or showing off or pushed to by others.
My brother almost died at 20 when he Overdosed by vodka. He drank a pint, passed out, and was rushed to a hospital where they barely saved his life.
Too many young people drink way too much too fast. That is bad.
The reason I don't drink much is easy: I like to be in control and when you are stoned you are not in control. Anyone can and will abuse you.

Illegal does not automatically mean wrong!
I think these parents are really smart. A more relaxed attitude about alcohol means that the girl is less likely to abuse it and binge at a party or something. Young people are naturally curious about stuff like this, so if they arent able to try it in a safe environment, they will find a way to try it that's not so safe.
I think more parents should relax a little about this stuff like Europeans do.

My parents would let me have a little bit of wine with dinner by the time I was 16 or so.

Personally, I think teaching your growing children how alcohol can fit properly into your life is not a bad thing. If you expect that your children will drink some alcohol as adults, should their first experience be at university parties? It is not the same as pot or cigarettes - I hope my children will not smoke, I hope they will not be drug users. When it comes to alcohol, I hope they enjoy it responsibly as something that in steady small amounts can benefit health, enhance food and be something to enjoy with friends and family. Sort of the way I hope they'll appreciate caffeine. I hope they learn early to view wine, beer or spirits as something to savour a little of, to relax and enjoy, and not some illicit thing to force down in vast quantities at parties.

I think that in the U.S. it is against the law. Most people 21 and over can't handle alcohol. A 17 year old should not be drinking at all.

If it was her parents, at home in a controlled manner; I think that would be one form of responsible parenting. She would know how alcohol affects her and the after affects with little risk of harm/injury. Other wise send the person off to jail where they belong.

She is a young woman and not a child first and foremost. She will has access to alcohol all high school students do and we know all college students do. Letting her know how to drink resp[onsibly in a safe setting is not a bad idea because she will drink if she so chooses in settings she may find herself in danger.

First, I think they are breaking the law. Then think of it like you would other things that you warn kids about. Do you have an auto accident while changing the radio station to show your child what it is like? No, you talk to them like intelligent human beings about the perils of drinking and all of the other things in life that might harm them. Then you pray they make good decisions.

my grandpa said that our generation of children are deprived of our rights, he was talking about driving, but my dad also thinks it wrong, he gave me little sips of beer as a child and he made me hate it, because I was exposed to a taste that I as a young child would not like, and when we first came to America then the kids drank what was called I think second draft beer, and it was whatever they used to make it used again, so it's really just our government trying to be in control (I think) and I turned out fine and have more respect for my dad then you can imagine, well I think that if they hand you a full unopened beer and you only have three tops, then fine, but make sure that it's safe.
