I got the ticket for running a stop sign, and I am protesting it. When I went to the court the judge told me that the officer was in the hospital due to accident, and he gave me one continuence and let me pick the date during the next 45 days. I thought if the officer does not show, then I am free to go. Does anyone know how many continuence the judge can issue if the officer does not show?

The judge should have accepted the officer's absence and dismissed your case. When you signed the ticket you gave your promise to appear in court on that date no matter what or get a bench warrant issued as a failure-to-appear. You kept your promise and it should work both ways. This is a traffic citation for running a stop sign, not a criminal case for crying out loud. But the judge gave the continuance and if the officer doesn't show again, that's it, case dismissed.

Since the Officer was "hospital" due to an "accident" it is up to the judge to decide on how many continuence he wants to give. The next time you go to court he may drop it but if you "protest" it then that will in turn "continue" the case!!!!!

Did you go for arraignment or did you go for a trial? In california, the state must settle the case within 45 days of a not guilty plea (unless you waived your right for a speedy trial) or else you can motion for a dismissal. So even if the cop doesn't show up, and they cant schedule you within 45 days of your not guilty plea, you could ask the judge to dismiss the case.
