It is if you feed them together. Just hope you don't find the dog masticating on the cat or you're probably going to need a new cat.

Isn't it exciting to learn a new word that sounds like a naughty word but isn't?!

Normal if they have been removed from the Mother too early. They will suckel on just about anything, a blanket or bedding is most common. But they will also suckle (masticate) on each other, even on a Mother cat or dog not their own.

The pups and kittens should be returned to their MUM for further kinling. Weening may have been done too early, thus they seek nurturing from other sources. 8 weeks old is the least a kitten or pup should be taken from the MUM. Older if the Mum still allows feeding.

Cats may continue to masticate for many months, reaching into adulthood of 6 months to a year if removed from the tit too early. Thus you may find your kitten sucking on your hair-line, skin, other items like stuffed toys and sofa pillows and what not!

Inter-species mastication is very common and has even been known to take place with inanimate objects. It's an old wives' tale that mastication can lead to alimentation or other ruminative behavior. As long as the animals don't indulge to excess, they should be just fine.

In this case, excess is defined as "the legs on a five thousand dollar sofa or the cat's left ear requiring fifteen stitches."

Don't worry it's perfectly fine if your cat and dog masticate together, no one like to eat alone right?

Masticate: to grind or crush (food) with or as if with the teeth (i.e. to Chew)

Are your dogs and cats constantly EATING together out of the same dish? I don't think this is abnormal at all if they have lived together and developed a relationship. If they were wild animals, or if they were domesticated animals who were strangers to each other, I think this would be unusual behavior.

Now if your dogs and cats are masticating ON each other....then that's another issue that does need to be addressed! ;)
