I was told when they took out my thyroid that I would gain a lot of weight. Why would I gain alot of weight? And how much would be alot for a 5'2 person? Are they saying I would become over weight? Or just gain it? Can anyone help me?

You should be put on a medication such as Synthroid or Levoxyl to supplement the thyroid hormon that your body will no longer be making.

The thyroid helps your body's metabolic system. When it is removed or suffering from impaired function (hypothyroid) you gain weight. How much weight? I have hypothyroid and before I was diagnosed I ballooned from 125 to over 400 pounds, in two years time. I am 5'2".

Make sure your doctor puts you on a thyroid replacement, and that you get your TSH levels checked every few months to be sure that you are getting the proper amount of medication. You don't want to end up a blimp.

My daughter has not need to have her thyroid removed, but she has a thyroid problem. She takes medication to help her thyroid function, but she has gained a lot of weight. The thyroid helps metabolism. If you metabolism is slowed down by problems in the thyroid you can gain weight. Talk more with your doctor or go to web-sites that talk about the thyroid, its function, and what occurs when it is not function properly. Good luck.

When the thyroid is removed they start you on medications to replace the output of the thyroid. You may experience some weight gain until they get the level right. shouldn't be anything you can't handle with a little caution.

If youre 5'2 you should weigh between 108 and 121 (if you have a small frame) You determine your frame size by wrapping your thumb and middle finger around your wrist, if they overlap you have a small frame if they touch you have a medium frame and if they dont touch you have a large frame. For a medium frame you should be between 118-132. Your thyroid gland has a lot to do with control of your weight. And I would guess you would gain between 5-10 pounds possibly. Ask your doctor though.

The thyroid regulates your bodies metabolism. If it's removed, then there's nothing there to regulate it - meaning there's nothing to help naturally burn the calories you take in. You will more than likely gain a few pounds. I guess it just depends on your body type. Find out from your doctor if there are any other supplements you can take to enhance your metabolism. Also, drink more water, and less soda, caffeine, etc. Exercise more.
