I hate going to the dentist because they stick all of those instruments into my mouth, so I prefer to go as little as possible. I've never had any cavities though and I'm 24, and my teeth never hurt me. So how much do I need to go?

Every 6 months is standard care for Dental treatment. At that time you'll need a proper cleaning and x'rays taken. Insurance will pay, for this if you have it.

Most people dont realize Dental Caries, can develope beneath the gum tissue and also develope inside the tooth itself, which isnt visible to the eye. Hense why, proper check ups and x'rays are recommended every 6 months.

Instruments are needed to determine sometimes if you have a cavity or not. A mouth mirror is used as well as an instrument called an 'explorer' (a handle with a hook on the end). In some cases a shadow will appear on an x'ray, so the doctor has to check it with this instrument. If its sticky, its a cavity, if not it's good to go. Trust me, no unnecessary instruments are put in your mouth that arent needed to diagnose you. And yes, they can be irritating, but they are necesary. Dental visits can be painfree with a little patience.

Tradition dictates twice a year, but in reality, the need for dental visits is totally individual. You need to see a dentist and establish the routine that is right for you.

Just because nothing hurts you today does not mean that nothing is starting to go wrong. New cavities are small and don't hurt at all. It's much better to get them fixed when they are small than to wait until they are big enough to hurt you.

I am a dental nurse... If u don't want all those "instruments" put in yr mouth just ask! A mirror is all that is required for a check up!
Every six months is a good idea as this will catch any problems whilst they are small and before they get to a stage where u need stacks of instruments in your mouth to sort them out.
It is normal to be concerned, i see it everyday and it is my job to reassure and answer question like this!

A mirror is very small and is just to move the tongue aside slightly or the insides of the cheeks to see all three sides of the teeth.

Hope this helps!

It's best to go twice a year so that way they can check to make sure you don't get cavities. It's much easier to fix any cavities you may get when they are really small.

It's recommended to go for a cleaning and to be checked every 6 months. That is how often my family goes.

You really should go every six months for a checkup and cleaning. Some people have to go every 3 months depending on what health conditions they have.

every six months to a year. That is the current recommendation. It is to get your teeth cleaned and a general exam. I hate it too.

I agree, but try to find a dentist who thinks like you do and who won't do a ton of needless xrays, ect.

ideally, you should go for a professional cleaning and checkup every six months. however, going yearly is sufficient. especially if you brush and floss as you should.
