i think its either because :
they just love life so much they don't ever want it to end
are just plain afraid of what the pain will be like when they die
are not so sure what is REALLY going to happen after they are gone (question their faith) "am i really going to heaven?"
are afraid they wont live their life to the fullest and will miss out on the great things in life.
I think if you live to be an old age you are pretty much not afraid of death anymore because it took a long time to get where you are, and you are just too damn tired to care anymore. But this is MY opinion.

I think that people fear death just for the reason that your question asked. I have a fear of being cremated. I lost my best friend last month and this is kind of gory but I will tell it to you anyways. Fist when she died on a Friday, the hospital wanted her out of there morgue on Saturday. The funeral home came and picked her up and they didn't put her out for showing until Wednesday. I had such anxiety laying there at night thinking about her just laying in the basement of the funeral home that I had nightmares. When we arrived at the funeral home her son and boyfriend had to go in and see it the casket was open or shut because they didn't know if they could fix her up enough after all that time or not. They had an open casket. This was the first real friend that I have ever lost in my life and I can still see her laying there in the casket and I still cry. She used to call me almost everyday or I would call her and we would talk for hours about how she was going to get a computer and how much she didn't like her sons wife. The story goes on and on. But to this day I can see her in that casket and then off to her cremation. I get upset about it almost every day. I don't want to die but I really don't want to be cremated. It scares me to death even know my soul will no longer be there.

I am actually not scared of death; I am scared that I am not going to be "good" enough when I die
I believe one's soul will live forever and that death is but an "x" amount of time in which people are separated, however, after that x amount of time is over they can return back together (unless one goes to heaven and the other goes to hell)
So, really, I am scared that I won't pass the test of life because I know death is the time when I will get my test's results

because they do not know what will happen after death, they are afraid to lose what they made on their lives so if we know or believe what happen after death and prepare for it and realized that the life is only a test for what we will do if is it our choice , no one will fear from death.

I'm more afraid of being old.
There's nothing you can do about death, when it happens either you'll cease to exist, or you'll be happier than ever.
But being 80 would suck. All your friends dying, your family doesn't visit you, it makes me shudder.
But I won't be fighting it, just trying to make sure I enjoy it!

it's the classic fear of the unknown. people aren't sure what to expect "on the other side." not knowing makes you fear.
