Hi, my computer is about 5 years old. Yup a dinosaur. Ok, I was looking into some DSL plans. One looked interesting and I tend to read FAQs before I commit to anything. So, this one said I need my windows cd to install. Ok, when I bought my computer at Future shop there was no windows cd included and at the time thought nothing of it as I was and still am somewhat a newbie to computers. Learned much since then. I did not think about having the cd at the time. So, how can I go about getting a windows cd after all this time? THanks for help and hope I don't sound so much like a computer dummie lol. Am using windows xp. This will cost me I am sure lol.!

If your computer is 5 years old, it is doubtful that it will run Windows XP properly. You can buy Windows XPPro or XPHome at the store between $130-$200. That is the cost of the Operating System.

The normal requirements (Not the minimum) for a PC to be able to run Windows XP properly is 512MB Ram (Especially if you have a built-in Video Card), at least a 20 GB Hard Drive, and a CPU that run at least 1 GHz. You can get away with less but you won't be happy.

If you borrow an XP CD from a friend, you will have problems Activating the OS. The best thing to do is buy it legally.

I have bought a legit XP Home CD for $80US recently. Shop around, but don't buy from no-names, too many scams.

You can get a (much cheaper) OEM version of windows if you purchase "qualifying" hardware at the same time from most online shops.

"Qualifying" hardware is sometimes as simple as a CPU fan. Take a look at a couple of legit online DIY websites and grab an OEM copy of winxp.

I find it hard to believe that your computer didn't come with any sort of restore cd at all, though I guess it is possible. Only thing that comes to mind is buying another one.
