Once in awhile when I am sleeping I feel like I am paralyzed. I feel like I am aware of what is around me but I cannot move or wake up, my eyes seem partially open because I can see some of the room. Sometimes I try to fight my way awake but feel like I am being held by something. When I do manage to wake up my mind seems very cloudy and disoriented for a few minutes.

While you may think you are awake, you are actually still asleep. This type of dream normally means you are struggling with a life changing decision, and this anxiety is showing up in your sleep. Resolve the things going on in your life, and I think you'll find you'll sleep much better soon.

Good Luck and Get better sleep soon!

Kinda but its hard to say. There is a disease that can leave you partially paralyzed right after waking up or during sleep something on that line.

I would talk it over with the doctor if I were you the next time you made an appointment. Probably nothing at all but you never know.

Yes I believe that is like lucid sleep when you are half asleep and half awake. You are probably more aware of this state than most people which is why you feel the paralysis because you are not quite yet awake. People like you can actually learn to control thier dreams so if you don't panic and embrace this state you might actually learn to like it and even control your dreams. I had a friend who could do this and wow...imagine turning your dreams into whatever you wanted! LOL

As you can see by the answers many people experience that state. I think you are just more aware of your dream state than most.

This is a very natural occurance called hypnogogic sleep. Sometimes called lucid dreaming. It can be very scary the first few times you experience it, but as you become aware of it you can learn to control your dreams and enjoy this dream state where reality and dreaming blend just a bit. Next time you feel this happening, try to feel a warm gentle breeze blowing across you and lifting you up and you may be able to experience the sensation of flying in your dreams which is always very cool. Don't be afraid of this- you'll get a handle on it if you practice.

Have it all the time. Especially when I nap during the day. It's called sleep paralysis. Sometimes, it's accompanied by hallucinations (Hypnogogic Hallucinations) where you think you see or hear things in the room with you. It's normal. Just don't be scared when it happens. To get out of it, just totally relax, and imagine that you are trying to go back to sleep.

That's because you are paralyzed! It is a mechanism the body uses to keep you from thrashing about in your sleep. I forget the chemical the body releases but it does the trick. Sometimes you wake up faster then the chemical wears off that's all.

Perfectly normal..weird but normal.

Either

Your mind wakes up a bit earlier than your body. So you can see because you most likley sleep with your eyes open and your mind is registering it. So you body is not awake so it wont move.

Or

You are having a REALLY bad nightmare.

I have had that happen and its very scary. I think its actually called Sleep Paralysis.

I had it happen years ago as a kid and a few times as an adult. From what I remember it was usually after a bad dream.

Ask your doctor next time you go for a check up.

Larry T is correct. Your mind does wake up faster than you body. He is right on, and doctors say the same thing, your body is disconnected from the brain while you are dreaming to keep you from actually acting out your dream and hurting yourself or someone else. It is VERY normal and I have had it happen to me many times. It IS weird to wake up and can't move for a few seconds!!! Pops
