There are many different dogs for protection but it depends on if you want the dog to be dominate or passive, and the size of the dog or what kind of protection you want. What i mean is that a Labrador or a Golden retriever will bark but wont bite just alert you that something is there. A German Shepherd might only if i has to jump on someone but before it will just bark. Another great dog is the Great Dane or the Irish Wolfhound because of their size just about no one would cross them but again they bark to warn too. A Pit bull,Doberman Pinscher and Rottweiler are the best type of guard dogs but they must learn to be good dogs and must be treated right because that what makes a bad dog. I had a pit bull and he would just bark but he would not even hurt a fly or anybody. Keep in mind that a pet that guards and a guard dogs are two very different things but any of the dogs i have listed are great dogs to guard, I would personally choose the Pit bull or the Irish Wolfhound or the Doberman. I hope i was of some help.

I would say the best guard dog is a Doberman. A bigger dog isn't always a better guard dog, although it might frighten people b/c of the size, being larger means it's less agile. That is why the doberman was bred to be a medium sized dog, so that it was compact enough to still be very agile and do the work it was bred for. Alot of the dogs listed can make a good guard dog, however the doberman is one of the few listed that was intentionally bred as a guard dog. And ANYONE who has ever seen a dobie give a mean face is not going to try to cross their path. Their teeth are a bit larger (being a guard dog, rather than a herder or retriever). If someone does come in they were bred to protect, so if guarding doesn't work, they will then start protecting and doing what they can, trying to bite, barking, all-in-all, attempting to get the person out of their territory. Overall I think they make the best guard dog. It takes a lot of training, but they are very smart and easy to train. You just have to make sure you do proper socialization with them as well, so they know there is a difference between people walking along the street versus someone trying to get into your house. They are also extremely loyal and great family dogs. Minimal requirements for grooming (only supposed to be bathed a couple times a year) and not much in the way of brushing.

Most working breeds are good guard dogs. Akitas are great for protection, Dobes, Rotts, Pit Bulls, Staffs, etc. Then some Herding breeds also, German Shepherds, Bouviers, etc. Any dog that loves you will protect you though that is a given. One of the most protective dogs I ever been around was my aunt and uncle's Lab. She was very protective, 2nd would've been my Akita, followed by a Bouv. And then my neighbors Rottweiler came to our house and laid on the porch for a week after my Ex and I got into a huge fight, not our dog but felt the need to protect my son and I. He was a good boy!

I could only account for my own experience. I've had german sheperds, an american pit bull and now I have a doberman. All of them have been excellent guard dogs, however I've found the doberman to be the most protective and intelligent of all. Though they all have different personalities I think most breeds of the typically intended for that purpose will be good guards... it all depends on the education they recieve from the beginning.

There are many types of dogs good for protection. The usual would be types like pitbulls, rottweilers, and german shepards. I had a chocolate lab that, because of her color and size, seemed to intimidate many people despite her friendliness. And, she had a ferocious bark, which did on one occasion frighten a would be burglar trying to break in my back door when I guess they thought no one was home.

I own a 2yr. old "Pure PitBull/Pure German Shepard Mix".
Having that combo I have one of the most loyal dogs ever!
You'd think a good gaurd dog as well......But nope!
He loves every single stanger or person, animal, or bug.....LOL
A very social dog he is.
He doesn't even bark....
-only if he hears a Firework (he stays home July 4th..lol)

Although I'm sure if it came down to someone trying to pyhically hurt his "Mommy" , he'd be may rescuer.
