Under the Insert tab, the Symbol tab is mysteriously gone. I don't know how to make it reappear, and I can't insert special characters right now, so it's very annoying.

OK - I have 2003 but I also teach 2000. Try going to Tools/Customize on the toolbar in Word. Click on the COMMANDS tab. Then... click in the left column and click on View, then look at right column, click on Symbol and DRAG it to VIEW on the menu. It will drag there.... should work that way with 2000.

You may need to reset your menu options. Go to the "Tools" menu and click "Customize". Then click the "Commands" tab. This works for Word 2003; I'm not sure how different 2000 is from 2003.

Maybe you can add it to your toolbar instead.
Right click on your toolbar, then click customize.
Click on Insert, then it will show on the right "symbol"
Drag/drop "symbol" to your toolbar and you'll have an icon there.
