the water is poured over hot rocks and creates steam. This steam is supposed to relax the muscles and open the pores in our skin. Also helps to use a sauna after strenous exercise to keep muscles from cramping if they cool down too quick.

It makes steam. Don't pour too much water, though! One time a friend of mine poured three buckets at one time and it made it so steamy I couldn't breathe!
