The human race peered into the night sky, and came up with an explanation for how the solar system that didn't seem to fit that well with the current Biblical Teachings at that time.

The problem wasn't so much that their model of the solar system conflicted with the bible...it was more in conflict with the teachings of Aristotle and Ptolemy. The main problem was that their ideas conflicted with the accepted world views at the time. Note that Galileo's veiw of motion was also different then Aristotle's idea that heavier bodies fell faster. Although it is true enough that our views of the universe change with time, God is still always there in some form or another for those who are interested. There will always be room for God, we just have to be willing to change our ideas about the relationship of God to nature.

Nothing happened to God. God and science are not in conflict with one another, In fact, the Vatican has a very reputable science department and you will find many scientists who are not athiests.

There are misconceptions, mis-interpretations, and mis-information when it comes to religious scripture. In the case of Galileo's discoveries, I don't think they ran contrary to anything the bible said, I think they ran contrary to public interpretation of the bible at the time. On matters of cosmology the bible is vague. If you are an athiest, you can say it's vague because it was written by humans who had little knowledge on such things at the time, or point out the fact that the version of Genesis in the bible is a very summarized interation of previous versions. If you're a christian you can say it's because if God went into detail, no one at the time would understand. After all, to most people, the Earth does seem flat.

Jim,

God is known and respected by peoples throughout the world throughout civilization. The idea that finding a 'flaw' in the Bible negates the existence of God is illogical, since many people who have had spiritual experiences have had nothing to do with the Bible.

In other words, the understanding of our universe that Galileo and Copernicus gave us didn't effect every beliefs' understanding of God. So, by your reasoning, nothing happened to God. He stayed the same, we just got a little smarter, that's all.
