Some people believe that the social responsibility for the poor hungry people (have-nots) in this world lies on the shoulders of the wealthy (haves)? They feel that people's needs should be met before the wealthy can have their luxuries. YET they have their computers and internet, both luxuries. If they were to sell their computers and cancel internet (TV, electricity, car notes) that money could go to feed MANY people in the world.

The reason is because they want want want, but the giving stops shy of them. There are some people who practice what they preach, usually religious folk who give all their possesions up and live simply, and in relative poverty by choice. Although I don't agree with them, I applaud them.

I am not giving all of my possessions but I do give 10%.
Plus I volunteer 8 hours a week.
You must teach people to take care of themselves. Welfare can teach a lack of respect & no desire to work.
The saying "Give a man a fish & feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish & he will never go hungry." is so true. Jobs are needed, set them up in houses & expect them to take care of them, luxuries are earned by everyone - why give them unearned?
I know it sounds tough to some, but I have donated items, money, time & anything I could to help the needy, but I want them to feel success for themselves. This is not for 3rd world countries onviously but in American it can be achieved with enough people helping & the goverment staying out. Before WWII the goverment did not take care of the needy, the community did. Charity at work to its fullness.

Um.....hmmmm.....I'm not sure if there was a question in all that but it seems like a good opening for a discussion. The concept that the "rich" are responsible for the care of the poor is a moral train wreck. The idea stems from the tax the rich mentality. You are correct in your observation that people seem to think that charity ends just short of them selves. I am amazed at how charitable people are with other peoples money. Funny how that works.

Very good point. I guess it's always easy to be generous with OPM- other people's money.

Also, people often have a hard time seeing in themselves the things they criticize others for. As an example, the artists and intellectuals who will decry the decadence and greed of the wealthy, while simulataneously making tens of thousands of dollars for giving a speech or for singing a song.

I understand what you are saying. I'm sure you must be tired of all the requests for money you receive. No, computers and internet are not necessary for survival. Electricity and vehicles aren't? Please take the time to research the amount of a welfare check and food stamps a family of your size would receive in your county. You will need to check with your local Dept. of Human Services. Be sure to find out the asset maximums before eligibility. Then take that amount and live ONLY from that and see how well you do. If you happen to be single adult, there is no assistance in most places.

You really haven't seen much of the country or the world, have you?

You obviously have lived an affluent life so far - and naive.

You equally obviously don't realize how fragile it is, because unless you are sitting on eight figures you aren't safe.

You better hope that some time down the road someone is talking about you the way you about people you don't know and whose lives you know nothing about.

You know the Christian God says you can't go to heaven with that attitude. Better start praying there is no God.

You are correct. Everyone wants something to be done but nobody wants to have to do it. Just drop a penny in the collection bin at the store and be satisfied that you did something.

Go to my profile and then to my questions. Look for the question: "Are we in the last 50 years?" and read the best answer. That should give you a little insight.
