I wouldn't get into "Medical Billing" alone...that's too limiting and too ripe for outsourcing and off-shoring.

My wife has a 2 year degree in Medical Assisting. It's a good field to get into if you want to have a job as there seems to always be a demand for it. Medical assisting is a larger field, where you learn billing, insurance, and medical procedures, etc. It's a "jack of all trades" training for a small practice. However, don't expect to get rich. If you make more than $10 to $15 an hour you are doing well.

My sister is an RN and told me that coders make more money. If you're a good coder and can stay with it for awhile you could make more than 75k a year in some areas. I am in college for medical office specialist with only 3 classes left and intern and it gave me a wide variety of skills. Coding, billing, transcription, accounting, etc. Not just billing. Transcription can make good money depending on the area you are in also. They get paid per line. Good luck.

More people are getting older. The baby boomers will need a lot of medical care. There will be a demand for it.

Hardly anyone pays their medical bills, especially in the emergency room, so yes, there's lots of work in it, but it's just a glorified title for a typist from what I've seen.
