I finally learned the names of all the state capitols with a set of flash cards. I'd like to learn the names of the major rivers in the US, and then the world (starting with Europe). Is there a good free resource on the Web where I can download a map of the US that shows the rivers - one version with the names of the rivers and one without the names, so I can test myself. I'm thinking a line drawing without political boundaries or colors.

There are plenty of geography websites that have simple flash games on them to test knowledge. A simple Google-Image search can help bring up enough maps with rivers and major cities on them. Also, a book from the library, like an atlas will be very helpful, especially if you can make some photocopies of the pages to take home and practice with.

That's a cool goal! I don't know any websites specifically, but you could search "geography" with "rivers" and see what you come up with. You could also buy a really good atlas and just pour over it - you sound like you could really get lost in an atlas (I know I can). Warning, though - a really good one is very expensive - I once bought one as a wedding gift for some friends who live to travel, and it cost me $140.

Once you find out the names of the rivers, make a song about it. Such as the old song "Istanbul Was Once Constantinople."
