Hi! I'm pretty sure that when Jesus said this, he was trying to show people who God was. God sent his son, Jesus, to be his representative on earth. If humans were to be face to face with God, we wouldn't be able to handle his glory, or be able to relate to him, so he sent his son in the form of a human man to get his message across to us. Jesus and God are one, so when we see that Jesus is good, loving, just, etc, we know that God has these same characteristics. So if we accept Jesus and receive him into our lives, then we have also accepted the one who sent him, which is God, and we will be saved from our sins!
