because it was a former french colony. the natives are of different ethnic groups, and so speak a multitude of different dialects and languages. this, besides the fact that education was almost entirely given in french, made it easier for everybody to ahve french as a national language.

Because they were a French colony. France got there and decided that despite the fact that people had been living there long before they landed, it was now French territory and thus had everything French imposed onto them.
