Im writing a paper in which there is a character who will be used for his forgiving quality. I need a name thats a biblical reference (something a little less obvious than Jesus!) associated with compassion and forgiveness, maybe even a play or alteration of Jesus's name (like Chris)

Not quite sure if this would be what you are looking for, but what about Stephen, who was praying for his murderers as they were stoning him to death?

Hosea was very forgiving of his horrible wife.
David was forgiving of his son.
Joseph forgave his brothers
could also use Joshua but that might be more obvious than you wanted.

you might also consider using the name of someone who has received forgiveness.

Isaac just kept digging wells when the people who lived around him kept filling them up. I'd say he was pretty forgiving.
