And not a "hard", "sharp", "etc" drink? Why SOFT? What is it about carbonated beverages that's SOFT?

Thanks for the bits on alcoholic drinks being hard.

But I'm looking for:
why carbonated beverages ARE soft,
NOT why they ARE NOT called X or Y.

And yes, I'm looking for info on CARBONATED beverages in particular.

Some of your definitions of soft drinks as not having alcohol would mean:
"soft drinks" include such things as water & apple juice. But water & apple juice are not referred to as soft drinks.

A hard drink is rum, Vodka, Gin etc..

The term soft drink originally applied to carbonated drinks and non-carbonated drinks made from concentrates, although it now commonly refers to any cold drink that does not contain alcohol. Beverages like soda, lemonade, and fruit punch are among the most common types of soft drinks, while hot chocolate, tea, and coffee do not fall into this classification.

Because they do not contain any HARD liquor! The SOFT in soft drink has nothing to do with the taste of the beverage but rather with what it does not contain which is alcohol.

My opinion on that is, drinks containing alcohol are referred to as hard drinks. Soft drinks have no alcohol

That is because there is no alcohol in it. Without they are soft drinks.
