It did not become popular until the TV commercial for "Beggin Strips" bacon flavored dogs treats that has a talking dog sniffing his artificial bacon strips and yelling "I smell bacon!".

i remember seeing a movie where that term was used- i can't remember which movie. it was way back in the dark ages - the 70"s. could have been Cheech and Chong or something similar- referring to police officers.
