That's the best way to get to know someone! Talking to him is the ONLY way you'll get to know anything about him, short of hiring a private investigator.
The two of you have something in common already; you're on the same bus every day. Just get up some nerve, and sit near him at first. Later, you can start a conversation. You could ask if he's heard of something that happened in your local news, or nationally.
Unless it's storming outside, don't talk about the weather, cuz that's corny. Find something to discuss with him. Compliment something that he's wearing. Eventually, you will get enough nerve to ask him to coffee, then you can really have a conversation with him. Good luck.

You need to relax and smile. Sit next to him and say Hi. If you think it's too weird, then wait and suss him out. But a friendly face and a Hi can open many doors. He might just be waiting for you to show some interest.
It would make the bus ride go a lot faster.
Good luck.

I completely understand what it is like being too timid or feeling awkward going up to a guy in a situation like this. Is there anyone you know that knows him? Anyone that can act as a "mediator" and set up a situation where you two can be introduced? Try that out. Or have someone tag along that will make you feel more comfortable introducing yourself and you both can talk to him.

how old are you? nothing's weird about saying hi to a guy on a bus.
If your that hung up about human interactions, wow!
anyway, you can always walk by him and drop something, a book or whatever, if the guy is a slight bit interested or just a gentleman which in both cases makes it worth you getting to know him, he'll talk to you, there, ice is broken and you live hapilly ever after.

I know how you feel, because I was in a similar situation at camp. Smile at him first. Try to find out his hobbies by observation or send a friend to talk to him. Saying hi wouldn't be weird if you were to be confident about it, plus it drops a good hint. Good luck!

find some common ground. if he's listening to CD's/ipod on the bus, ask him what kind of music he likes. if he plays a sport, talk about sports. anything to get a conversation going.
