The Crappie grow fast from the time they are born they reach with in one year 1/2 pound which is your hand size on the average. With in two years the Crappie reach full maturity weighing 2pounds or better depending on the ph level and food source provided.
The world record Crappie that would of tipped the scales was lost in 1996 from Lake Harding, Columbus, Georgia where an old man had been fishing near the dock lights. I was in the boat accross from him. The Crappe he pulled up out of the water before it fell off had his pole bent over and from my estimation it would of weighed around 7 lbs. It was the largest Crappie I had ever seen and I usually cath them at 3 to 3 1/2 pounds.
In order for a Crappie to grow 7 lbs it had to be alive at least 5 years or better.

i have heard 6-10 years. i know it takes them a long time to grow big... in a good stock pond with lots of food it's faster, but in some lakes i fish in, where there is overpopulation issues, even the older fish are small.
