Certainly this is an impredictable desease. I have since 2004. MS attacks at random the central nervous system. I dont know how severe are his lesions and where also age..and many more, no one really knows; your best source should be a neurologist.. There is plenty information and links in the national society of MS (www. nsms.com). Diet, temperature, type of tratment play significant rols. There some new Tysabri and claridibine in trial. Swank diet users have testimonials regarding the benefits of it (www.swankmsdiet.org). I hope things get better.

HI Bob,
Sorry to hear about your cousin, this is a sad and DEVASTATING disease, not only for the diagnosed but also their caregivers and family members.
There is NO cure or treatment for MS. It is a disease that takes away the ability for the brain to send the message to move to, in this case, the legs. It will get worse, eventually he won't be able to feed himself. I know that this is hard. I took care of a lady with progressive MS and it was terrible to watch her go from waling with crutches to wheelchair to bed bound.
There are ways to keep him limber. get a physical therapist to come and show him and his caregivers some exercises to do. It is very important that he keep moving EVERYTHING that he still can move. If you don't use it the more likely it is that that will be the next to go.
There are also trial medications to ask his doctor about, such as the baclofen pump. And a list of many others. They are worth a shot of slowing the progress, but there aren't any that can give function back, only slow it from taking over other parts of the body.
Again, Bob, I am sorry you and your family are going through this. i wish you the best of luck!
God Bless,
Coley

I am sorry but your cousin is right about his prognosis. Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative disease (i.e. it gets worse with time). MS is poorly understood which makes it very hard to find a cure. There are medications to relieve pain and other symptoms but that is as far as modern medicine can offer. There is a good article on diagnosis and treatment of MS published by the Journal of American Family Physician. The article uses language which requires some background in medicine. The article is:
"Diagnosis and Management of Multiple Sclerosis" -- written Dr. Peter Calabresi (http://www.aafp.org/afp/20041115/1935.html).
If you have any questions about it, you can send me an e-mail.
