I wouldn't spend the money on a 5 year old. Most breeders, I've checked with, stop breeding at 4 or 5 years max. Unless she was free she isn't worth whatever they are charging and for the dog's sake, she should be spayed & sent to live the next 15 years with a family.

I don't breed a female after 6 years. Is the one that is trying to sell you the dog, a breeder? If they are, the dog may have been spayed, may not be able to have pups, or may have to have a c-section. I would want to know a lot about any dog like this instead of just buying it so she can have babies. If the person selling the dog is a breeder, there is some reason that she is wanting to get rid of it. Also, a 5 yr old dog is not worth much. Most people will give them away at this age. I wouldn't get the dog just to have puppies.

Why would you buy a 5 year old female to breed. Really, a bit ch should be bred starting at 2 years and done by 5.

All depends on who and what the dog is.
We traded for "Sarrah" when she as 4 1/2 and so far besides becoming a CH herself, she has produced Eucanuba National Invitational qualifiers two years in a row, and produced a Best of Opposite Sex at a National Specialty.

So going with a five year old dog isn't without pressident,,, it just has to be the right one.

5 is too old especially if she's never had puppies before. If she's a champion, I would probably be willing to have one litter from her but not otherwise and no more than one. Make to get your male tested for brucellosis and all the other tests necessary for your breed as well.

You can still breed with a 5 year old, but there is more of a chance she has less puppies, meaning some die during or before birth. Also the surviving pups are more prone to illness. I wouldnt recommend it.
Good Luck!

Please do not breed your dog go to http://www.petfinder.org/ when I answered your question there were 109,627 waiting to find a forever home, many of theses puppies and dogs are in shelters that euthanize after a certain amount of time has passed

National Stats
The sad fact is once a puppy is past its cuteness; or a dog displays behaviors we do not know how to deal with, many canines are discarded like old newspapers. On average 100,000 dogs and puppies are listed on www.petfinder.com, daily. The National Council reports it on Pet Population Study and Policy, from the 5000 or so US agencies who responded to the survey, that over 2 million dogs enter shelters annually. Of those 27% are relinquished by owners, 42% are turned in by animal control, 31 by other sources, of these dogs, 56% are euthanized.

God you people talk as if this dog is a machine or some sort of item. this is a life what do you mean it isnt worth it unless she is free. I think that this poor animal has had enough litters of puppies and deserves to go to a loving home instead of a breeder like yourself

5 is pushing it for a first litter, especially if it is a larger, shorter lived breed.
