I can tell you this from first hand experience. I am in Mexico right now doing a job for a Canadian company. I speak English only. Where I am at, there are very very few people that speak English.
Pointing with the hands works good. But, let say you want to order food, read a menu, wash laundry, go grocery shopping, rent an apartment, stay in a hotel, listen to the radio, or watch tv. Without speaking Spanish, it all sounds like the teacher from the Peanuts Show.
Not only the simple things in life, but speaking two or more languages will definately make you more marketable in the job field. It opens your possibalities to work for a global company. Travel around the world on somebody elses dime.
Not only that, but it is cool to know a language that somebody else doesn't, so you can make fun of them and they will never know. LOL :)
