I have a couple questions actually. I am prior service, US Marine Corps, and was wondering if the CG took prior service members? Also, does it work like it did in the Corps that I have to go where they send me or do I get to choose what duty station I go to? I had both ground and technical jobs when i was in the Corps and was wondering if this would help or hurt my chances. Any and all advice is welcome as long as it relates to the subject at hand.

Yes the USCG takes prior service Marines. Visit USCG.mil to locate a recruiter or visit Military.com to search the CG chatroom. A recruiter can better answer billet (duty assignments) availability once your rank and rate (MOS) are determined. There are many bases throughout the US and its territories that one can spend 2-4 years. Many are commanded by senior enlistmen/women. Since the CG is small and spread thin, command is offered to E-6 and above. As for being a sailor, most CG'men have more underway time than the majority of Navy personnel. Our icebreakers and high endurance cutters may exceed six months at sea per year, and not just in coastal waters. One ship just returned from China and another is heading out to the Middle East. I have spent three years on ships sailing the Caribbean and North Atlantic. I've been to Europe and Bermuda twice and spent many months in the Caribbean. It's not uncommon for Navy fleet operations to form around a finely ran CG cutter. Someone needs to show the Navy how to be a sailor.

you will go where there is a need of the service but you get to have some input in it. you'll fill out a "dream sheet" with 20 or so choices on it and they would try their best to get you a place on your list.
and yes they take prior service. call a coast guard recruiter

I don't know anything about the Coast Guard. One thing I do know for sure through is it never hurts to ask. If you ask them if you can get in the Coast Guard they can give you one of three answers.Yes,.No.or Maybe.

Which one of those answers is going to hurt you? Do it now and never look back.
