YES they can two things to consider.
#1 make sure the archive is off or any message can be looked at.
#2 you can save all the important data on an external disc and then have the computer cleaned by a professional guru.
Only a professional can view the files inbedded deep within the computer but if the messages are archived. go to the IM menu and hit view archive folder.
Then follow my first advise to clean it up if you are trying to make sure your tracks are protected...lol.

it can stay on as long as you click the 'save message' on message archives. if not, each time you log off it will be deleted.

They are in your history under "message Archieve"you can choose to save automatically or go to archieves and delete them yourself!

no they don't. you have to save them manually. so unless you saved them, you have no access... it's all deleted. except maybe by the company that provides them IM program (MSN, AOL, Yahoo!)
