Take what you know and go to your nearest genealogical library. There are people there that can sort of steer you in a helpful direction.

go to a census archive and try to find someone in your family but remember they do not release census information for 70 years.

go to web sites such as ancestry.com and go into the message boards and start reading.

do a lot of grave yard hopping where you know relations are buried.

you have to become a very good detective of your family and look for information everywhere.

I use ancestry.com, and have been able to trace back to the 1700's in Germany, Poland, and Scotland. The people at ancestry are more than willing to help you with your search as well.
