My sister is a geochemist and invented equipment to measure the above ground fumes to detect oil. The dirt can be sampled for certain elements. There's a good volcanology program at McGill Univ. in Montreal that you can contact for more information. Also, NASA has done some studies. Good luck!

they usually detonate some explosives at the surface and listen to the rebounding echo vibrations and make a guess determined on that.
