my car runs from point A to point B. one day it started shutting off. for some reason i turned off the a/c. the problem went away. time passes and it gets cold outside. i turn on the heat. 20 minutes later the sputtering returns. i turn off the heat, the sputtering stops. any ideas?

Unfortuneately without being there to duplicate it, I would have no concrete idea...

The first poster made a good point in that the a/c compressor if locking up can drag things down (or the drive belt is slipping). The a/c compressor is on in the max a/c,a/c,and both defrost modes. Turn say to vent of vent/floor with the heat on and see if the problem is there.. If not, a/c compressor (or belt), if yes.. you are looking at other issues.

A a/c fan only draws about 15 amps max.. It's fused for 30 amps though and should be on it's own circuit... But not enough draw unless the battery was extremely weak (and you keep the blower on at max) to cause any real concerns.

Something could be crossed or backfeeding but without seeing the vehicle I wouldn't have an idea.

The thermostat may be stuck open also called a loop. This will cause your cars computer to register incorrect info and try to adjust it, causing your engine to shut off and lose power... sputter.

was it the heat or the defrost. it makes a difference. if it was the defrost, its probably the compressor. If it was just the heat, it may be the fan motor drawing too much current causing the engine to act up. Try running just the fan with no a/c and see if it continues.

I can't tell you how easy it would be to fix it though....

Sounds like a water pump issue or maybe the belts need checking.
