Self-injury is a self-preservation technique for many cutters; the self-mutilation relieves anxiety and/or depersonalization symptoms which could lead to psychosis or suicide if not alleviated. Self-harm can be focusing, calming. It can give a person a feeling of control over their lives and their bodies which they have experienced no other way. For many cutters, self-mutilation seems the only appropriate response to the state of the world and to how they're feeling about it and about themselves. Many cutters are extremely intelligent, sensitive, and creative people who have a hyper-sensitivity to the world around them. They may feel like an open wound walking through this extremely screwed up world while most people seem happily oblivious to all that's wrong with everything.

To FEEL. Sometimes they feel so numb and out of contact with reality... they cut themselves to feel pain... to feel alive again.

Sometimes there is so much pain INSIDE you don't know how to deal with it so you create pain OUTSIDE.

Sometimes there is so much pain inside and you don't know how to ask for help so you do something to get the attention you are needing so desperately. It is a cry for help.

Most cutters though do it secretly, on their stomach or the inside of their thigh... someplace where it won't be seen. These are scarier because they're not crying out for help. These are the ones who will be more likely to commit suicide.
