Can anyone tell me how to apply for medicare insurance in new york city?

About six months before you turn 65, contact your local Social Security office to sign up for Medicare.

Medicare and its different components can be pretty confusing. You may want to contact the professionals at the New York City Department for Aging --which serves five buroughs of your city-- before you call Social Security. Professionals there can help you with what you need to know to be fully prepared for your visit to the Social Security office. They also have up-to-date information about Medicare supplemental policies and the new Medicare Part D benefit. The phone number I have is 212-442-1000.

Medicare is for those who are 65 and over, unless they are disabled and then they can get it earlier. You call the Social Security Office near you and they will explain everything to you. You might have to bring in all your information, and then everything else will be done on the phone.

Do you mean Medicaid? You have to be on Social Security Retirement or Social Security Disability (for 2 years) to get Medicare. To apply for Medicaid you have to go to the Department of Social Services. To the best of my knowledge you still have to do that in person. You cannot do it over the phone.
