About six months before you turn 65, contact your local Social Security office to sign up for Medicare.

Medicare and its different components can be pretty confusing. You may want to contact the professionals at the New York City Department for Aging --which serves five buroughs of your city-- before you call Social Security. Professionals there can help you with what you need to know to be fully prepared for your visit to the Social Security office. They also have up-to-date information about Medicare supplemental policies and the new Medicare Part D benefit. The phone number I have is 212-442-1000.

Area Agencies on Aging are one of the best kept secrets around for seniors and their families who need quality information about Medicare, Medicaid and consumer issues . They work with a lot of seniors everyday, so they are great resources who probably know the "scoop" on the different Medicare supplemental policies and Part D plan options--information you will want to know about!. (And they are not trying to sell you anything!)

You can also call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find how to contact area agencies on aging in other parts of the nation--or if the number listed above is not correct.

If you do contact your local Area Agency on Aging and like the help that they give you, let your local county officials and your folks in Congress know, too. Area Agencies on Aging are funded by the Older Americans Act and most don't have big budgets for services or advertising!

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Medicare is for those who are 65 and over, unless they are disabled and then they can get it earlier. You call the Social Security Office near you and they will explain everything to you. You might have to bring in all your information, and then everything else will be done on the phone.

Do you mean Medicaid? You have to be on Social Security Retirement or Social Security Disability (for 2 years) to get Medicare. To apply for Medicaid you have to go to the Department of Social Services. To the best of my knowledge you still have to do that in person. You cannot do it over the phone.
